A bowing wall is different from a settling foundation. Settlement moves down. Bowing moves sideways, because something outside is pushing in. It is one of the few foundation issues we treat as genuinely time-sensitive.
Block walls typically show a horizontal crack partway down, often near the middle where leverage is greatest, with the wall pushed inward above it. Poured walls may bow with fewer cracks but visible curvature. Hold a straightedge or run a string line vertically down the wall and the deflection becomes obvious.
Settlement often stops once the soil finds equilibrium. Bowing usually does not, because the pressure returns with every wet season. A wall that moved a half inch over several years can move considerably faster once it has lost structural integrity.
Every one of these methods addresses the wall, not the reason it moved. Stabilizing without correcting drainage means the same pressure keeps working against the repair. Any complete plan should include getting water away from that side of the house.
